FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Montgomery County Approves Property Tax Exemption for Surviving Spouses of Police Officers Killed in Line of Duty

Publish Date: 9/24/2026

FONDA — The Montgomery County Legislature has passed a local law allowing a 50% property tax exemption for surviving spouses of police officers who were killed in the line of duty.

The exemption provides tax relief to eligible surviving spouses in recognition of the sacrifice made by their spouses in service to their communities. There are specific requirements and qualifications that must be met to receive the exemption. Eligible residents are encouraged to contact their local assessor to discuss their eligibility and application requirements.

For residents in the City of Amsterdam, the deadline to discuss the exemption with the City Assessor is Dec. 1. For residents in the towns, the deadline is March 1.

“Coming from a career in law enforcement, I recognized how valuable this resolution was. There’s no way to put a price on the sacrifice these families have made,” County Executive Pete Vroman said. “When a police officer gives their life protecting our community, the loss is felt long after that day.  I appreciate the Legislature recognizing that and taking this step to provide some relief to those families.”

“We are honored to be able to provide this exemption to the surviving spouses of police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty,” Legislative Chairman Michael J. Pepe said. "These officers put their lives on the line every day to protect our communities, and while we can never repay them for that sacrifice, this is one small way we can show our gratitude and support to the families they left behind.”

The exemption currently applies only to County property taxes. It does not apply to school, town or village taxes unless those taxing jurisdictions separately adopt the exemption.

Eligible property owners should contact their local assessor for information about the requirements, qualifications and application process.

“We are honored to allow this exemption and grateful for all of our police officers across the County who work to protect us every day,” Director of Real Property Christine DePasquale said.
